___ mercy and peace reveal(?) from our Lord and written Savior Jesus the Christ amen. I have varied more people than I care to count and remember now. In the short time I've been in ministry many pastors recall some special memories that they'd like to share with people despite such sad founding work and so I could tell you about some of the you may know. Some of our friends who at the last moment when I visit them while they're breath(?) is pain they know that maybe it is the last time I will see them and you know what you would think that it's would be hard to go visit them. No, it's my joy too and you wanna know why let me tell you the ___

Greg, it's Murphy and Pete. Did you hear from our lord and recent savior Jesus the Christ. No pain no gain sweat plus sacrifice equals success. Pay the price we shall overcome some day I've fallen and I can't get up. Maybe your thinking I've fallen and I can't get up doesn't quite rank up there with all the rest that we said like we shall overcome I'm sure you think that maybe there's a lot to say about our topic this morning Christian suffering. Jesus did not relinquish hardship and difficulty

I'll be back by 11:00 mom I promise. Don't worry dear I'll remember to stop by and get milk on the way home I promise. This is the last night I have to work late I promise. This morning sermon is only gonna be 10 minutes I promise. Huh we hear promises all the time don't we and it's a voting year so we're gonna hear a lot more these promises well they're at the heart of our relationships with one another. Making a promise signifies that something is important to you. You desire to have a strong relationship with the person to whom you are promising. Our ___ certainly reflects that. God demonstrates his love to man.

Serious. Ok so think about those places. Have you ever seen little kids get scared going up to those escalators with their little teeth and the machine looking like it's about gonna eat them to their feet. Did you ever see that. I think about those escalators and while the people are riding up and down those escalators, some down some up, just picture for yourself a small boy who decides to go up the down escalator. Like the kid who would go on the slide and tries to go up the slide right. He makes

Elijah the prophet did incredible things. He lived about 850 years before Jesus was born. Not much is known of his early life. He arrived on the scene, calling Israel to return to the Lord in repentance and to turn away from worshipping an idol called Baal. He prophesied for 15 years or so and then was gone. (pic: Elijah) But during his ministry he did incredible things. We heard about something incredible in the Old Testament reading. Elijah and Elisha came to the Jordan River. Elijah took off his cloak and struck the water. The water spread apart, and the two of them crossed on a dry river bed. Incredible. Earlier in his ministry the region had been going through a severe drought. Food was scarce, especially for the poor. Elijah met a widow who had a young son. The mother and boy had enough flour and oil for ONE more meal. Then they would starve. Elijah came up and asked the woman to make him a meal. She did. What happened next was incredible. The flour and oil did not run out. Day after day they had enough to eat. It was like the Energizer Bunny. The flour and oil kept going and going and going so they would survive the drought. (pic: Elijah with the woman & boy) Then the widow’s son died unexpectedly. The widow accused Elijah of bringing much grief into her life. What happened next was incredible. Elijah took the boy to an upper room and stretched out over him. Three times he pleaded with the Lord to give the boy’s life back. The Lord did! The boy started to breathe again. Elijah had done an incredible miracle, and the widow believed that Elijah was indeed a man sent from God. Another time Elijah was sent to challenge the king of Israel—Ahab—who had married a woman named Jezebel. Jezebel had brought hundreds of false prophets into Israel to lead the people to worship Baal. She was a powerful and vengeful queen. In order to call the people back to the Lord, Elijah challenged 850 false prophets to a contest. (pic: Elijah challenging the false prophets) An altar was built and the terms were simple: call down fire from above to destroy the sacrifice on the altar. The false prophets danced and prayed to their gods and cut themselves for hours. Nothing happened. Elijah even threw in some teasing and jeers. Then Elijah had the altar soaked with water. He prayed. What happened next was incredible. The true God of Israel burned everything—flames engulfed the sacrifice, altar and water. It was obvious who the true Lord was and who the people were to follow and worship.
