Equatoria - A Walk Across Africa: Signing off before departing Austria

Greetings this Tuesday, April 26, 2011, from Buck Creek Lodge in the village of Gars Am Kamp, Austria, the base of operations for EQUATORIA – A Walk Across Africa.

After two years of planning, all systems are on go and tonight I will depart Vienna for Dubai for a connector flight to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, where I will then catch the final leg to Pemba, Mozambique, for the start of the expedition.

With this expedition I plan to get back to exploration in its truest form. Do the trek, collect the scientific data and then come back to share what I learned.

So I will not be travelling with a satellite phone or a laptop or a film crew or a back-up truck or a standby helicopter for emergency evac.

And no I will not be blogging every hour on Twitter talking about the last sandwich I ate or how much I miss my family.

For the latter is obvious and frankly I will not be eating any sandwiches, only local fare.

I will file occasional audio blogs to Facebook like this one via iPadio to update my family and friends.

There will be updates on the expedition website.

I will also be staying in touch with numerous media outlets around the globe that have expressed a keen interest in my expedition.

What is key for me is to enjoy this once in a lifetime epic journey every step of the trail, poli-poli, one step at a time.

My goal is to take in all that I encounter, for EQUATORIA – A Walk Across Africa is not about walking into a planetary void to capture a photo of myself with a frost covered beard or a sun blistered nose looking miserable.

EQUATORIA is all about interacting with fellow humans to see how collectively we can all make the planet a better place to live.

In closing, thanks to all of you that have been sending me well wishes over the last few months.

Thanks also to the fine sponsors for the gear provided for the expedition.

To quote T. S Elliott, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

With that in mind, I’m off to the trailhead in Mozambique…
