The Council on International Finance, Trade and Economics is, in many ways, a typical student organization at the Josef Korbel School. It liaises between students and faculty, coordinates events and plays an active role in the Global, Finance, Trade and Economic Integration degree program. Ryan Economy, former president of CIFTE, and Laurel Mazur, current president of CIFTE, took some time to talk about the organization and its projects for the upcoming year.

China, US, PLA

The yearly Jackson/Ho China Forum is one of the largest events held by any Korbel center, and this year proved no different. Focusing on the theme of China's role in Africa, CCUSC brought in a fantastic group of speakers, one of which was Major General Zhu Chenghu of the People's Liberation Army. Perhaps known best for his controversial remarks concerning nuclear weapons, Gen. Chenghu took some time to discuss a wide variety of topics concerning China and the world at large.

nonviolence, conflict, Josef Korbel School

When you think of nonviolent pursuit of political goals, you might think more of Gandhi or Martin Luther King rather than counterterrorism or counterinsurgency. For Dr. Erica Chenoweth, this is not as contradictory as it may seem. Evaluating conflicts, both past and current, she believes that states embarking on nonviolent responses to violent nonstate actor is key to ending conflicts around the world.
