Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying the second presentation week! Thank you again to all the presenters and thank you to everyone for providing excellent peer review feedback. I’d like to take a minute to share with you the story of the first time I provide a presentation on a research study and received peer review feedback on it. I had spent several weeks working on a qualitative research study with rural high school students about their perceptions on schooling. I transcribed the interviews, I analyze the data and I presented my findings to my classmates and my professor in my doctoral program. After I did my presentation, my professor said (and my professor is Lois Weis) “Well Andrea that was very interesting, but it certainly wasn’t qualitative research.” My peers then followed up with many very critical questions about my work and I realize I had a lot to learn. It is very important to go through the peer reviewed process when you’re learning how to translate what you have learned about qualitative and quantitative research in reading and in discussion, into a real world project. I promise you it never goes as smoothly as you might imagine, and I certainly did not expect for anyone to present a perfect research project here in 689. I hope you can see the value of doing our presentations and receiving peer review feedback. I know it can be difficult to hear about some of the challenges or difficulties with your work, and I really appreciate you being open-minded to the process. Every researcher that does a valid research project goes through an approval process which involves some level of critique. Even researchers such as a Lois Weis still have to have their work approved by funding agencies, institutional review boards and other interested partners in the research. And that process always, without question, involves some level of critique. So what we are doing in our class these last few weeks is very similar to the real life process of getting a research project approved. I hope you are enjoying it and I hope you are find the process not to painful, and I hope we can all learn a lot form the work that we are sharing with each other. I will post a summary post on each discussion board after each presentation has ended this week, which means tomorrow. On Thursday I will make summary post. I posted them last week on Friday because the discussion ended on Thursday. Please be sure to take some time to read those posts. They’re very short, but they point out what are the most important critiques of the research projects that were presented. I want to make sure you get my take on what the most important parts of our peer reviewed discussions have been. For those of you who are presenters, I do post presentation scores the day after the presentation discussion board is closed. So, be sure to check the Blackboard grade book for your score and comments on your presentations. I have not yet scored the final Literature Review. I’ve been spending time scoring the presentations and I want to make sure I return all of the literature reviews back to you at about the same time. I would like to ask for your patience and I would like to score the final literature reviews next week during the Thanksgiving holiday. Next week, as you know, you don’t have any discussion boards or readings or assignments for this course. I hope you all enjoy this Thanksgiving holiday with your friends and family! During that time, I will have a few days where I can work on scoring your final reviews. I hope to have all those scores given back to you by the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Again, thank you for your patience. I hope you all enjoy the rest of the week’s presentation discussions and I look forward to our continuing work in this course. Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying Week #11. I think you all are having another terrific discussion this week on participatory action research (PAR), mix methods research and the difference between empirical and non-empirical research. I hope you all have taken time to read the articles written by our own department chair Dr. Susan Birden, and listened to Dr. Birden’s audio description of the work that she does. We added her work to this course because she really talks about a need for non-empirical research to be valued within the education field. Often times we see the divide in research be between qualitative and quantitative research, and non-empirical research gets left out of the conversation. So, I am really excited that you have been exposed to research from empirical to non-empirical. I have posted the discussion questions for the presentation week in the presentation week folders. You can take a look at how the discussion will run and that will give you a sense of what to expect when you’re presenting. Of course your presentation materials and your final literature review are due this Saturday. I will post all of those materials on Sunday and then our presentation discussion during Week #12 will begin on Tuesday. We will have an altered discussion schedule from next week from Tuesday to Thursday, due to the Veteran’s Day holiday. The presentation discussion board will open on midnight on Tuesday and will close on midnight on Thursday. So we have that entire discussion period to work on the presentation discussion board. This discussion will not have the same structure of our regular discussions, in that your first post response is not due as soon as the discussion opens. Instead you are required to make a first post on each of the four discussion boards (or three discussion boards if you are a presenter) within the 36 hours that the discussion is open. So, the discussion is open on midnight on Tuesday and then you are going to want to make sure that by noon on Wednesday you’ve posted a first post response to everyone who is presenting this week. Yes, presenters you do have to participate in the other discussion boards this week, as well as facilitate your own discussions board. I know it will be a busy week, but the discussion activity and the materials for the discussion are only reading requirement for this week and I think it is going to be extremely interesting and very valuable, as well. Those of you who have not done a lot of peer review in previous courses or have not worked with me in the grant writing course previously, I want you to encourage you to think through the peer review process. It’s critically important that you approach peer review with an open mind. Both as a reviewer and the presentation presenter who is being reviewed. Please know that we are all working together to learn as much as we possibly can about research and research methods, and all of the peer reviewed critiques will be given with the best intentions. So, I think if we all have an open mind and know that we are all working together to try to learn as much as we can the peer reviewed process will go very well. I’ll post some peer reviewed guidelines as well just so that you can take a look at how peer review typically should be approached. Thanks again for all you hard work in the course good look on all your final assignments. I hope they are coming along well. I will of course be available via “Ask the Instructor” discussion board and by email. Hello Everyone, I hope you are all enjoying Week #11. I have certainly enjoyed your presentations on your Mini Case Study of an International Adult Education Provider. Thank you for choosing such interesting providers, I think we have all been learning a lot from these presentations. Of course the follow up discussions is currently under way and it will go until 10pm tonight. Next week, we do not have a discussion, so after our discussion ends tonight we will not be discussing together until Week #13. Next week we are off of the discussion board in observance of Veteran’s days. Even though we don’t have a discussion next week, we of course still have course reading to do that are due this Sunday, and you have readings due the following Sunday, as well. You also have a personal journal due this week and next week. While you are off from the discussion board next week, I highly recommend that you begin or continue to work on your next two paper assignments. You do have your Micro Teaching Lesson Plan due, as well as an article critique due, before the end of the semester. The guidelines for the micro teaching lesson plan are available in the assignment guidelines folder and I will have the guidelines for the article critique posted by this Friday. As always please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns about the assignments. Even though we will not have a formal discussion next week the “Ask the Instructor Discussion Board” will be open and I will have my normal office hours. As a reminder, the micro teaching lesson plan is due November 23rd, and your article critique is due CEP week on Monday, December 9th. I’ve really enjoyed all the hard work that you are doing in this course- please keep it up! As a reminder, registration opens tomorrow for the spring semester. Please make sure you contact your adviser to touch base and to get your pin number to register for the spring. I will hopefully work with you all again sometime in the future, and I hope you all enjoy the rest of the semester and have a great spring semester as well. Hello Everyone! Thank you for a great discussion during Week #6. I'm sorry I didn't post an audio message last week, but my ipadio account wasn't working. I will try to post an audio message every week from here on. I also created a video folder in our Blackboard site. I'm going to post video content each week to support what we are reading and discussing in class. There are several videos in the folder already, including the one we watched for our follow-up discussion this week. Thank you for turning in your papers a week and a half ago. Normally, I have all papers scored within a week, but this first assignment takes a bit longer as the Writing Tutor scores the paper first. If you were not referred to the Writing Center but you would like additional help with your writing, please send me an e-mail. The Writing Center is a free service offered to all Adult Education students. You can work on your writing at your own pace with the Writing Tutor. All of the papers will be turned back this week. I score the papers "first in, first out" so that the first paper submitted is the first paper graded. All of the papers will be returned by Sunday, and I promise future assignments will be scored within one week. Thank you, again, for your patience! You do have another large assignment coming up. You have a site visit report due on October 19. Those guidelines are posted in the Assignment Guidelines folder. As always, please feel free to post any questions about the assignment on the "Ask the Instructor" discussion board. I hope you all have a great experience visiting an adult education setting. We've been doing a really wonderful job on the discussion board talking about some of the most important issues in adult education, such as access issues, diversity issues, and foundational concepts, such as andragogy, self-directive learning and transformative learning. Also, I am really enjoying your personal journal entries. I am humbled that you are willing to share so much with me. Of course, I keep these journal entries confidential. We will continue with our educational autobiography work for the next two weeks. I hope you are finding it to be a useful activity. I have office hours at the usual days/times for the next several weeks. Please feel free to e-mail, call or stop in for a visit. Thanks again for all of your hard work.
