Nullification in the Civil War. Jassie Calhoun of South Carolina argue that a state can nullify or refuse to recognize an act of Congress that it considers unconstitutional. The Civil War was supposedly a conflict over slavery and dispute over the relationship between the Southern states and the national government. The Civil War forcibly refuted the doctrine of nullification while also conferring that the federal union is unresolvable(?). Gibbons v Ogden 1824 and the commerce clause background of the case. The New York legislator granted Aaron Ogden an exclusive license to run a ferry service on the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. We kick off with Ash Pryce of the Edinburgh Skeptics. Sorry about my slight warble but Ash is as lucid as ever. Find out about their phenomenal plans at www.skepticsonthefringe.co.uk. Rounding off is a great chat with Robin Ince at the Laughing Sole Comedy Club in Birmingham, where Robin makes us Brum Skeptics a promise. It’s recorded so I think that's legally binding.

Summer is over and the podcast is back! It felt like ages since I recorded one of these. I suppose it was, since the last three were those crazy outdoor fringe specials. It was a bit strange, but I think I figured out how to do it. At least by the end anyway. In today podcast there's a bunch of news music, including two tracks by bands that I saw while in New York last week. Oh, and there is a great oldie by Talulah Gosh to end with.
