This mini case study is based on research of an International provider of Adult Education. Hi Everyone, this is Amanda Gonter. “It takes the brain six minutes to die once oxygen is cut off. It can take a person as little as five minutes to bleed to death. Bones that are not set, may never hold weight. Cuts that are not cleaned can become infected. In the minutes after a trauma, how the body is treated can make a world of difference to the outcome, and time is of the essence” (Kathleen Northridge). St. John Ambulance, “believes that it’s absolutely unacceptable that so many people die needlessly – because no one could give them first aid when they needed it” (“About us”, 2012). St. John Ambulance is an organization and charity that provides adults, and even high school students, of any race or gender with the essential knowledge, skills, and training to perform first aid and CPR in emergency situations. St. John Ambulance is a form of nonformal education supported by local communities located in London, England. The overall mission of St. John Ambulance is to “provide an effective and efficient charitable first aid service to local communities, to give training and products to satisfy first aid and related health and safety needs for all of society, and to encourage personal development for individuals through training and by membership of our organization” (“Vision”, 2012). Nonformal Education similar to St. John Ambulance is also found in the United States. The Amercian Red Cross is non-profit organization that offers a variety of instructional courses catered to the field of medical emergencies and situations. The American Red Cross, mission statement states, “The emergency responder. The lifeguard at your local pool. A trusted babysitter. Each year, an average of more than 9 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies through American Red Cross training classes, including First Aid, AED and CPR training. Get engaged. Get certified. Get inspired - while learning an important new skill, you’re in the right place” (“Workplaces”, 2014). Both St. John Ambulance and The American Red Cross provide effective courses regarding health and safety and almost mirror one another. Although, I did notice some differences, for instance, St. John Ambulance offered unique certifications such as fire marshal training, stress management, and moving and handling (teaching individuals to lift properly in the workplace) while The American Red Cross offered training in disaster relief, and lifeguarding. Specifically regarding First Aid, the course duration was quite different, as mentioned previously, St. John Ambulance’s session was three days and The American Red Cross was only two to five hours. The courses are also broken down differently for instance the material covered in First Aid at St. John Ambulance, might be covered in CPR and AED in the American Red Cross. Honestly, I was quite surprised to find that my particular International Adult Education choice to be almost parallel with one of the American providers of a similar program. I found this mini case study to be very informative.

Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying Week #11. That’s right we are getting to the end of the semester. It comes so quickly! Thank you all for a great discussion this week. We are still continuing our conversation of formal and non-formal forms of adult education and we are getting into some discussion about the import issues of oppression and privilege within the field. You will be taking ADE 655 as part of the Master’s Degree program in Adult Education. I teach that course and of course that particular course focuses on adult education and its connection to oppression and privilege to society. So you’ll have an entire course to dig deeper into those issues later in your time here in the Adult Education program. My research is in social class oppression as well as oppression based on gender and based on location in society, so these issues are very exciting for me and you may see me jump in on the board to ask some clarifying questions and to move our discussion forward. In addition, your follow up discussion for this week is around education and globalization. You’ve read several chapters on international issues in adult education and this is the discussion thread where you can discuss those further. If you have an interest in international adult education we will be offering an elective course in the fall. That course “international adult education” will be taught by Rachel Dominguez one of our wonderful lectures. I encourage you to speak to your advisor if your interest in taking that class. Registration for fall and summer courses begins tomorrow April 9. Please touch base with your advisor to help you come up with a plan for course mapping throughout the program. If you’re looking for a summer course, I’ll be teaching ADE 660: Grant Writing for Education and Training during the A session this summer and I’d love to have any and all of you in that class. But don’t worry if you don’t take that class you’ll have at least one more opportunity to work with me in the program in ADE 655 and potentially ADE 689, the research course, as well. Speaking of international adult education, this Saturday you have your mini case study in international adult education due. You will be finding information for this case study largely through the internet. You can do a search of the type of adult education that you’re interested in, such as literacy education, and find out what programs are available internationally. Then you can pick an international program to find out as much information as you can about that program and then compare it to how literacy education or whatever type of education you choose operates here in the United States. As always, please feel free to email me questions directly through the “Send Mail” function in our Blackboard course site or post the questions on the “Ask the Instructor” discussion board. Often times if you have a question your peers may be having the same question, so it’s wonderful to ask those questions on the “Ask the Instructor” board. Next week you will be presenting your mini case study as part of your discussion First Post. It will be your entire discussion first post. You will have the option to use a YouTube video, an ipadio Phonecast, or to post a script. If you haven’t tried to use one of our alternative forms of technology such as ipadio or YouTube video, I strongly encourage you to do so during this discussion board opportunity. It’s great to learn different types of media that you can use later on in your career in adult education. Unfortunately, ipadio recently got rid of the text to speech function. This was heartbreaking for me because I use ipadio so often. So please post a script or a description of your presentation along with any ipadio phone cast that you do. There are many different tools available for free online to do free text to script transcription. You can search those on the internet. If anyone really likes a particular text to speech tool, please post information about it on the “Ask the Instructor” board or on the Bulletin Board. Thanks so much for your help with that! This week I have my regular office hours. I’m just finishing them up now. I also have them tomorrow, Wednesday, from 8am-12pm. Next week my office hours will be slightly different. I will have my Wednesday office hours from 8am-12pm but instead of Tuesday office hours, I will have officer hours on Thursday morning from 8am-9am. As always you are welcome to email me, call or stop in during those times and if those times aren't convenient please send me a note and I’ll try to find an alternative time to meet with you. Hello Everyone, I hope you all had a terrific spring break! Thank you for turning in your Site Visit Reports. I scored them all within a couple of days, so you should have your scores back. The only exception is the two papers that got caught up in the error on Blackboard. The papers showed in my grade box but unfortunately I couldn’t open them. I did send emails to the two people that need to resubmit their papers. I am so sorry for the inconvenience. I do not control the Blackboard platform so when there’s a problem I have to work through the SUNY Learning Network and often they can’t get me an answer for several days or as in the last couple of cases, they can’t figure out an answer at all. So again, I am really sorry for these technical problems. I do my best to keep everything running smoothly. I promise you these problems bother me as much as they bother you. In the future, if there’s every a problem in the dropbox please just email me your paper- that is not a problem for me at all. I never want you be inconvenienced by these problems with the Blackboard platform. This week we are having an awesome discussion as we are watching and listening to and reading all of you presentations about your many different and interesting sites visit. I really like this week because we are all learning the many career options that are available in Adult Education. The possibilities are really almost endless in what you can do with your Adult Education degree, and I really like giving you all the opportunity to learn as much as you can about the Adult Education opportunities available in the community. The discussion board is open now it will be open until 10pm on Wednesday. Not only will we be engaging with our presentations, but you’ll also be going back to the readings that were done on March 23 to talk about the formal and informal chapters that you choose about these Adult Education providers. Talking about these chapters gives us another opportunity to learn more about the many different options available in the Adult Education field. In addition to our discussion this week, our educational autobiographies are due as a personal entry on Saturday. We’re actually at I believe Part 4 of our educational autobiography. We are moving on from talking about K-12 education to talking about our experiences in undergrad education. I look forward to reading all of your journal responses. Next week we actually have another paper assignment due. This is your Mini Case Study of an International Adult Education Provider. The assignment guidelines are posted in the assignment guidelines folder, and of course you may ask me about this assignment at any time via the “Ask the Instructor” discussion board or by contacting me directly via email. Most of you will do your research for this paper assignment through the Internet. Please very carefully cite all of your sources. Because you’ll be using the Internet I expect much of your paper to include cited material. As we are talking about citation and APA style, I want to remind all of you to keep working on your APA style and to carefully review those APA style guidelines. In the Site Visit papers there were many APA style errors remaining, so I’m going to refer you again back to the Harvard APA style tutorial and the Purdue APA style guide. It is really important that you master APA style during your time in this course so that you are prepared to take the comprehensive examination for graduation in the future. If you have questions about APA style you are welcome to contact me, and you’re also welcome to join the ADE Writing Forum. Any student in the Adult Education program is welcome to join the Writing Forum to work with the Writing Coach on format, grammar and APA style. Please send me an email if you would like to join the Writing Forum. Last but not least, I am finishing up my office hours for today and I will have my regular office hours tomorrow which are Wednesday from 8am-12pm. Next week, I will also have office hours on Tuesday from 8am-9am and Wednesday from 8am-12pm. This weekend I’ll be traveling to Philadelphia for the AERA annual meeting. It is one of the largest and most important conferences in education every year in the United States. It draws scholars from around the country and around the globe and I’ll have the opportunity to share some of my research on high school STEM opportunity structures at the annual meeting. Because I’ll be in Philadelphia I might have a slightly slower response time for email and the “Ask the Instructor” discussion board. However, I promise I will meet my guaranteed 24hours response time. So please, don’t hesitate to send me questions or post questions or concerns on the “Ask the Instructor” board. Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying Week #7. This week we are having a discussion about transformative learning experiences, as well as thinking through some of the issues in adult development and how they relate to adult education. We are also continuing our very important conversation on access to both adult education programs and classrooms. One of the most important things we can do as adult educators is to promote welcoming learning environments and this week we are continuing our conversation of how we can do that. The discussion board is now open. There is a somewhat higher requirement for posts this week. Since we have such a small class, our conversations haven’t been quite as robust as I think they can be. So I have upped the requirement of the posts a little bit hoping to inspire more meaningful interactions between peers on the discussion board. As a reminder, the discussion board is our class time each week. In the program we are required, to be certified to give you a Master’s degree here at Buffalo State, to have a set class time class time every week and that time is our discussion board. So please plan to spend about the same amount of time you would spend in a face to face classroom on the online discussion board, and that is about 2 hours and 40 minutes. We also do a personal journal entry, so that can be included as part of that time as well. Speaking of personal journals, this week you will be completing your mid-course review. This gives a chance to reflect on your reading and the work you’ve done in the course to date and to think through what value you found so far in the activities, discussion, papers, and reading that we’ve done. I love getting feedback on the course! Please do not feel you need to censor yourself. This journal is for you, so you should be very honest with yourself about the things that are working really well and if you have any concerns you should feel free to share them. As always, I have office hours this week, today on Tuesday I had them, and I will have them tomorrow on Wednesday 8am-12pm. As always, you are welcome to contact me at any time to set up an alternative time to meet and you are welcome to email me questions or concerns any time, or post them on the “Ask the Instructor” discussion board which is now working in both sections of AED 500. So last week, you received back your Adult Education Definition and Postionality papers. You all should have your scores and detailed comments from both the Writing Coach and myself. I hope you found this detailed feedback to be useful. This paper is generally one of the more difficulty papers in the program, because it’s the first paper you often write and it is scored very strictly for both grammar and APA style, as well as for content. Don’t be discouraged if you struggled with citation or if you struggled for grammar or formatting or APA style. All of this is something we want to catch in the first paper in the program so that you have time to work with our free Writing Coach to improve your writing skills, so by the time that you get ready to do your comprehensive exam for graduation you are ready to pass that exam. We never want to have a student pass all of their courses and then find they are unable to write a passing comprehensive examination. So if you have been referred to the Writing Coach, please take advantage of the free service that we offer for you. Additionally, those APA sources are available in our Assignment Guidelines folder. There’s a link to the Purdue Owl APA guide and the Harvard APA tutorial and there are also videos about plagiarism. As a reminder, plagiarism is a major ethical violation so you must site any words that are not your own using quote marks or a block quote and you must site any idea that is not your own with a reference at the end of the sentence or thought. You should at this point be working on the next paper assignment which is the Site Visit Report. That report is due before spring break, next week on March 22. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this assignment. We will not be using the “Turnitin” drop box and I will not be sending this to the Writing Coach. I will look at this assignment mainly for content and I will give you comments for your APA style and grammar. If you don’t try to APA at all I will take off points. So please do try to use APA style and try to have great grammar and format, but again I will be grading mainly for content in this assignment. I can’t wait to see the site visits you choose to conduct and to see where you choose to go to do your site visit. We will all be learning about each others’ site visits during the discussion when we return from spring break, Week #10. I will post the presentation guidelines for that discussion next week so that you will be able to work on that presentation discussion over spring break. If you choose to so you will actually have over a week to get that discussion post ready, if you would like to work on it early. If not, you’re welcome to work on it the weekend before the discussion begins, as usual. Thanks again for all of your hard work everyone! Hello Everyone, I hope you’re enjoying Week #6. Thank you so much for your excellent work on the discussion board. The discussion is now open and it will be open until 10pm on Wednesday. This week in addition to thinking through the readings from all of this semester and this week, we are also watching a video and thinking through the ways that the lecturer, Ken Robinson, considers failures and needs in education, thinking through how those thoughts from Ken Robinson apply to our experiences in K-12 education and our hopes and goals for K-12 education, as well as how his ideas relate to the ideas in Adult Education, such as self-directive learning and something that we’ll be talking more about next week- transformational learning. I hope that you are enjoying the video. I did not post it because I think you should agree with everything Ken Robinson says, but rather because it’s a great jumping off point to have a discussion about how we can improve education. In addition to your discussion this week, you do have another personal journal entry due. Thank you so much for all of your work on your educational autobiographies. This week you will be thinking through the qualities of your best K-12 education teachers and those teachers who were less effective. It’s really important in this educational autobiography entry that you be very specific. You really want to think about what were the exact qualities of the teachers that you had that made them great, or maybe not so great. At this point you should be thinking through your Site Visit Report which is due at the end of Week #8, right before we go on spring break. Because you have to do a site visit, it is very important to plan in advance where you would like to go and what you’re going to be looking for in your site visit. The assignment guidelines for the site visit are posted in the Assignment Guidelines folder. I hope you all find a very interesting and exciting adult education program to observe, and I really look forward to hearing our thoughts on those observations. Thank you so much for your patience on the grading of the Adult Education Definition and Postionality papers. The papers will all be returned back to you tonight- by the end of the day. I have received them back from the Writing Coach and you will receive both my comments in one attachment and a separate attachment from the Writing Coach. We all have different skills and some of you have not had the opportunity to fully develop your writing skills in your undergraduate education. We know that employers want to see Master’s level prepared students who have strong writing skills and strong critical thinking skills, and those are two things that we work very hard on here in the Adult Education program at Buffalo State. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about the way your paper was scored or you think it was scored unfairly or incorrectly, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to discuss with you in detail the score that you received and I am always open to hearing reasons as to why the score should be changed. At this point, I think we are moving pretty quickly to the mid-point of the semester. The snow outside makes it seem like the time is moving slowly, but I think our time together is moving very quickly. Next week you will be completing a midpoint review as part of your personal journal entry and then Week #8 is the official mid-point this semester. ___ is another long day on the road on the transport area in ___ the M5 and M7 from Uffa(?) to Cassan(?) but while 3 basic course in Cassan(?). We got here and we're just driving down a road in a typical February and see here we got Cassan(?) ok just for come back in time. I just wanted to see we've been to in Siberia but in the end of the street. The building ___ we just saw this most wonderful gremlin at the end of the road. And it's a huge little walls compound with a massive cathedral under mosque with in the same compound so got a beautiful gold onion gems as ___ so and then this wonderful blue ___ at the mosque and they just look so magnificent and the flag of Siberia that we've been ___

Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying the Week #3 discussion. It’s really wonderful to read all of your responses on the discussion board. I think the discussion is going very well. It is currently open and it will be open until 10pm on Wednesday. On Saturday this week, you have a personal journal entry due by 11:59pm. It is the first part in our series of educational autobiography posts. We’ll be exploring our past educational experiences to understand how we’ve come to believe what we believe about education, teaching and learning. Please note that next week is President’s week. There are no classes at Buffalo State on Monday and Tuesday, so we will not be having a discussion board next week. We also will not be having readings next week, and I will not be holding office hours on Tuesday or Wednesday. The focus next week will be completing your Adult Education Definition and Positionality Paper. Please pay very careful attention to format, grammar, APA style and of course the most important part- content. The assignment guidelines are available on the Blackboard course site. Please feel free to post any questions about the paper on the “Ask the Instructor” discussion board, or you can email me private questions directly using the Send Mail function in Blackboard. I will be available all week next week for questions, so please do not hesitate to ask me any questions that you have about the assignment. I will be sending those papers to our Writing Coach, as well and the Writing Coach will score those papers for grammar, format and also APA style.
