This is my first Ipadio blog entry. It is about Twitter. I set up my Twitter account some time ago, and am constantly trying to find ways to improve it. I want my Twitter profile to come across as professional, but approachable, as well as caring and sharing. I want the design to reflect that. I currently have a scenic background with hills and the like, and this is mainly inspired by the fact that my business is Yorkshire-based, and that is something of which I am proud. I intend to alter a few elements of twitter, and may at some point decide to use a couple of different backgrounds, or alter them seasonally. I am hoping that Twitter will help me achieve a number of different things, but mainly it is a way of me keeping in touch with the thoughts and discussions of my peers and associates, as well as finding out useful information from the links and blogs posted. It also gives me greater scope to promote my blog. Twitter is a big part of my overall plan for social media within my business, because I see it as a highly effective and approachable media, with an ever-increasing number of people getting involved. Over a one year period, my goal is to be gaining a minimum of 20% of my new clients through Twitter, either directly or indirectly. Twitter cannot replace face-to-face in my industry, but can certainly enhance its effectiveness. In terms of protecting your identity online, the obvious no-nos are putting full details like birthdays, family info, full home address, etc, in the public domain. Also, using the same password throughout can create a hazard as well. Giving good, useful information, and being transparent about where you got that information from is invaluable in building trust in any situation, and Twitter is no different. Setting up Twitter was not difficult. Like most things, you can do the bare essentials and still make it work, or can really get involved and alter colour schemes totally, etc. None of it is too challenging, however, just sometimes time-consuming when you get absorbed! Twitter allows you to email a tweet to anyone, whether they are on Twitter or not. This is useful if you see a Tweet which answers a question asked by one of your associates, or is relevant to their industry. I also use this as a way to send myself a reminder of items I wish to revisit whilst I am on the move.

This is an audio of the Book "Tweet me gently: a twitter guide for the voluntary sector". This book came about when it became clear that many people "don't get" Twitter. But once they do they see the benefits. If you want a copy of the text go to amazon and search for "Tweet me gently"
