When are we ever going to use this. I'm sure we've all heard this question many times. I've been calling on some Math teachers. I love being able to answer students with a real life example or experiment. Two projects that I do in my class for ratio and proportion are the cool aide to experiment in a scaled time. Both of these projects bring to life 2 concepts that can be difficult to understand with the work alone. The cool aide experiment demonstrate to ratio comparing amount of cool aide powder to amount of water used. I set up a lab with pitchers measuring cups spoon cool aide powder and a date work sheet. Student fill in the chart while they experiment with different amounts of powder and water to see which ratio produces the best tasting cool aide. Students enjoy this experiment however next year I think I will use lemonade instead of cool aide due to the effects of the red cool aide on some students. The follow up discussion is a great way to use the actual vocabulary.

As a teacher we are to be facilitators we should provide an environment conducive to learning. Being understanding and compassionate and encourage the teacher student and parental future teacher relationship. An ideal environment begins with the teacher as a role model for their students they should demonstrate respect honesty empathy responsibility as well as provide motivation to learn. The classroom should be a safe place for students feel comfortable to express themselves and get involved in learning activity.
